Name: Ellen Green
What you Write: Suspense, true crime
Agent: Jessica Alvarez
Why BookEnds? Jessica Alvarez asked to see my full proposal packet I think two days after I sent it in. I was beyond thrilled. When I first started writing, I searched through the old Writer’s Market and made a wish list of literary agencies I wanted to work with someday, when I was good enough. BookEnds was at the top of that list. When I got my proposal packet together to send out for this project, BookEnds was it. I really liked the fact that the agency had a family feel to it, that they were very writing and client focused. The agency seemed like a comfortable place to land, if that makes sense, so landing with this agency is everything my younger writing self (and older writing self) could have hoped for.
Describe your experience with “The Call.” What do you write? When did the agent catch you? What was it like to get the call of your agent offering on your book/work? How long had you been querying/submitting, etc? Share as much as you’d like!
I was on vacation with family, had sent out the requested proposal packet to Jessica Alvarez and had that butterfly feeling, hoping, waiting. I kept rereading the packet thinking, was this ready? Should I have waited longer to send it out? I wasn’t sure. I’d never written in the genre before, so I was filled with all those insecurities. I got a notice from Jessica saying she wanted to set up a time to talk and I was so excited. I think I had a drink before the call, which maybe wasn’t a great idea, but nerves, you know. And I was on vacation. We chatted for a while and at the end, she made the offer. She might not have known that at that moment I saw this little project of mine sprout wings and soar. I think after that, my family took me out for what turned out to be a five-hour celebratory lunch. Thank you, Jessica!!
