Welcome to Summer!

The unofficial start of summer that is.
Today BookEnds will be closing early to enjoy those first warm days that Memorial Day weekend brings. While I’d like to say that all of us will be settling into the weekend with a stack of books to read just for pleasure I know my team better than that. Hopefully everyone at BookEnds will get at least one guilty read in, but I also know my team is hungry and four days of staying away from submissions would be unheard of. In addition to reading those books we’re dying to see on our list, we’ll be searching through our requested materials, and maybe even queries, looking for next summer’s guilty pleasure.
For me, in between submissions, I do have a stack of books I’d like to get to. Realistically, I’m going to have to pick just one. Will it be That Darkness by Lisa Black, The Killing Forest by Sara Blaedel or Silent Creed by Alex Kava? It looks like I might need to add some women’s fiction to that pile.
Whatever book you pick up this weekend, make it a good one.
Enjoy yourselves!
Thought I I’d share a recipe with you that’s super easy, fast and perfect for a warm weather holiday.
A yellow or butter cake mix. Bake per instructions, using rectangular glass baking pan.
Let cool.
Using a toothpick, press into different spots on the cake, swirling a bit to create tiny (deep) holes.
Get a box of strawberry jello (can be any flavor really or more than one!) instead of adding 2 cups of boiling water as per instructions, use ONE. Whisk until mixed, then pour over the cake evenly.
Set in fridge for at least 1 1/2-2 hours.
Top with whipped cream and strawberries.
Enjoy!
For years my family enjoyed the quintessential Memorial Day.
Our friends and neighbors came together, sharing the cost and preparation ,but most importantly, the opportunity of gathering in one place for most of the day…..And where was this magical place? The tiny backyard of our postage stamp piece of “God’s Little Acre”, right smack dab in the middle of Staten Island NY……Times have changed, a few much loved picnickers have passed on, our children are middle aged. And for a few of us ….what seemed like ideal marriages, have failed. We have all moved on…..Or have we…My daughter, just called and asked for the coleslaw receipe I made back then. A thousand miles seperate us, but the memories bind us together in the most lovely way. Happy Memorial Day, remember to reflect on why we celebrate. And then go make memories!
How jealous am I! This morning it was near-on freezing at 1’C (about 32 or 33’F I think). Winter officially starts on Wednesday *sigh*.
Enjoy your weekend and I hope you enjoy your reading =)
