Effective Book Promotion

I’d like to hear more about the most effective ways an author can promote their books.

–A Question from the Blog

Are you going to be upset if my answer is, “I have no idea?”

There are a ton of ways to promote a book–reviews, blog tours, giveaways, social media, book trailers, advertising… The list goes on. Are any of them effective? Sure, some of them are, but who knows how or for what book.

The difficulty with promotion, also the frustration, is you are never quite sure what will work. What’s effective for one book might not work for another. What worked on your own last book, might not work on your next book. I have to tell you, I don’t envy publicists. Their jobs are not easy.

My suggestion is to find what you like, and do what works for you. The most effective promotion is that which the author has fun with.

Actually, that’s great advice, Jessica. I think if you have fun with it, then you’ll do better at it. I know for me authors’ websites are mega important. If I stumble across an author, the first thing I do is go to their website. I read about them and their books – and then use their website to keep track. But I am probably odd like that.
