Why BookEnds? Bookends has been so welcoming from the very beginning and I appreciate all the information they share online. The guidance they’ve offered through this process has been invaluable to a first-time author like me! I’ve also been impressed by their active commitment to finding writers that identify as LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC. They don’t shy away from stating, and then living, their values.

Tell us a bit about your writing process. Where do you write, and how often?

I write just about anywhere. With five kids in the house, finding moments of calm can be tricky… especially in 2020. I write on the couch, at the kitchen counter, on the bed, and occasionally even at my desk. But my favorite spot to write is in the big glider we have from when the kids were babies. I have a dedicated time each morning without disruption and that’s where you’ll find me.

What do you love about writing [insert your genre(s) here]?

I love crafting characters that can take a big idea and make it concrete. Feelings and abstractions that can be difficult to understand become much clearer once embodied by a character and edited down to under a thousand words.  Kids are forever trying to make sense of the world they live in and I like figuring out a way to show or teach those concepts.

Why did you choose the genre you’ve chosen?

I love how picture books combine visual arts and language to engage their readers and tell the whole story. I think it mirrors how my brain works! As a teacher, I’ve also been breaking concepts down and attempting to empathize with learners for my whole adult life. And when it really comes down to it, picture books were the first books I loved and collected and the ones I’m often most excited to share.

What is the hardest part about writing picture books?

The word limit! I always have to cut out about half of my first draft. But I do appreciate that it makes me choose my words so very carefully.

Twitter or Instagram? Or Facebook? Where can we find you?

I’m on all of them, but Instagram is probably the best place to find me.
