What genres do you write? Read?
I love goofy horror-comedy and teen angst the most – I grew up reading and watching primarily Jhonen Vasquez and Archie comics, which explains a lot! Anything with a dry or unexpected sense of humor and a chip on its shoulder about the difficult parts of being alive is exceptionally my bag. I mostly write stories about Teenagers With Problems (capital T capital P), frequently with a strong sense of location-based nostalgia, but with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Is “teen angst comedy” a genre yet?
Plotter or pantster?
Pantser all the way! …until I start actually drawing the comic. I, like many of my comics-making ancestors before me, spend a meticulous amount of time planning every last detail of a scene. Plotting will be the death of me. You’ll find me under a pile of unused thumbnails, clutching a list of possible names for my side character’s brother’s stepmom’s band.
Do you have a writing playlist or a vision board? If so, what’s on them?
Absolutely! I make playlists/album lists/mixtapes for every story I write, cause I basically LARP out the tone/era/environment for every comic I make. For JED THE UNDEAD, my upcoming YA supernatural-angst-comedy graphic novel, I’ve been listening to a lot of 2007-2010 era emo, Rozwell Kid, old pop punk, scene music, sad trap, and lots and lots of mc chris. I also put a lot of TV on in the background, mostly King of the Hill and Venture Bros (which becomes incredibly obvious when you check out the backgrounds in my comics, ahem).
Drink of choice when writing? When not writing?
Morning: Coffee with milk and sugar, Night: Black tea with lemon and honey/sugar, Not writing: The kind of fancy schmancy twelve-dollar mixology drinks that are made with botanical extracts and aged gin. I should probably drink more water.
Day or Night writer?
I am one of those mythical “morning people” you hear about (something I never thought I’d grow up to be!). I like to start writing or drawing early in the day, taking an extremely long midday break, then getting back into at 7 or 8 PM.
If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would you want to meet and why?
I would love to sit down and have a real conversation with Bo Burnham (does that count?). He nails so much of what I’m trying to express, and has furthered the conversation about comedy, art, and depression because of that – it’s like looking five minutes into the future and wondering if people will understand me then, and if they do, if they’ll do anything about it. But I don’t want to drag anyone down, so I’d probably just ask if he wants to split some beers or something.
