Name:

Mandeep Toor

What you Write:

Young Adult

Agent:

Emily Forney

What book do you wish you had written, and why?

The one book I will forever be hung over is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I first read the book when I was a junior in high school, and I have been obsessed with the storytelling and characters since. I strive to write something as influential and heartbreaking and courageous as this novel.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?

Usually, I will be binge-watching anything and everything on Netflix. I recently took up crocheting to create my own mini handmade wardrobe. I also enjoy visiting cafés with my friends in downtown Vancouver.

Where can readers find you on the web and social media?

Readers can find me on Twitter at @themandeeptoor.

What’s the last book you read?

Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn.

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?

I would absolutely love to travel all across Europe as I write. Something about sitting in a Parisian café or on a beach in Santorini sounds very appealing and much needed for my creativity and motivation! And, of course, I can’t be an author and not say New York City.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing?

“If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it.”

– Beverly Cleary.

What’s your favorite piece of writing advice you’ve received?

My favourite piece of writing advice I received is to keep writing. I cannot tell you how much my writing has improved since I first began in 2020. Over two years and four books, I gained the experience and skills to write the book that got me an agent and it was so worth it!

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

I am so excited to start my journey as an author with BookEnds, especially as they stand for creating long-term relationships. Diversity and representation are a significant part of who I am as an author and it is clear that BookEnds continues to champion books from and about marginalized communities.

What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches?

The advice I would give them is to never give up and stay delusional. I received rejection after rejection, but I deluded myself into thinking I would get an agent. It would just happen. And it did. Seven months into querying, I finally signed with my lovely agent, Emily. It can definitely be demotivating, but trust the process, no matter how deep in the query trenches you are. I don’t care if you’re six feet under, if you believe in yourself and your writing, it will happen.

What was the most important question you asked when interviewing agents?

My most important question was, “What is your editorial vision of my manuscript?” The agent’s answer would inform me whether we had similar visions of the novel as it is so important to sign with an agent who really understands the core aspects of your work.
