Imagine this: I am in a quiet library, going through my submissions. I open a middle grade novel by one Jennifer Locke. And promptly read half of it in one setting. Jennifer’s writing just sucks you in and her characters are achingly real. I needed this book! Only problem: it was getting close to Christmas. But I decided a Christmas present to myself (of a new client) was the best way I could end 2017. And now I have an uber talented new middle grade author to work with!
What book do you wish you had written, and why?
The first thing that comes to mind is “anything by Rainbow Rowell.” I’m awed at how she captures life so perfectly—the messy, the mundane, the hilarious. Her dialogue is perfect and her love stories swoon-worthy, while still being one hundred percent relatable.
If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?
Napping! I’m a big believer in the power nap. I need them often because I have toddler twins.

What’s the last book you read?
The Plot Whisperer by Martha Alderson.
If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?
Probably a mountain lodge, or somewhere with really big trees. Also necessary: a huge fireplace.
What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing?
Something Anne Lamott said: “Do you like books? Then you’re going to have a good life.”
What’s your favorite piece of writing advice you’ve received?
“If it scares you, you’re onto something.”
What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?
I’m thrilled to be working with Natascha and to join the lovely, supportive authors on #TeamNat.
What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches?
Keep at it! I always come back to the old adage “the difference between a published author and an unpublished author is the published author didn’t give up.” Whether this book is the one for which you receive representation, or it’s the next book, or even the one after that—when you finally get The Call from an agent who loves your work and totally gets it, all the hard work will be so worth it.

    Hey Jennifer nice to meet you,

    A few questions, would you notice a small British writer hiding in a corner of your mountain lodge?

    If scared is good, does it count if you scared yourself?

    How do you cope with toddler twins? I’ve done the toddler thing 4 times and now I have beagles. Twins still sound scary, good luck and enjoy every second you can with them.
