Welcome to BookEnds, Yvonne Ivinson!

I’m so excited to welcome Yvonne Ivinson to BookEnds Literary!

Her work as an author-illustrator is absolutely brilliant! I don’t want to say too much about the project that drew me in – but it is a really cleverly done, sparse text story that is absolutely charming. Her art is warm and inviting, and her characters feel like they would be friends or neighbors of those in the Hundred Acre Wood.

I hope you enjoy learning more about Yvonne and her work!

Do you have any writing or illustrating rituals? (e.g. burning a candle if you’re having trouble getting started at the computer or writing longhand first if you’re feeling uninspired.)

When an idea comes to me I always scribble it down on a piece of paper as soon as I can. Sometimes it’s first thing in the morning and sometimes while driving in the car, but more often than not it’s while I’m out on a long hike in the woods with my dog. I like sketching messy thumbnails to remind me later of what I had in mind.

What do you love about writing children’s picture books?

Picture books are pure escapism and a magical reality where anything can happen. When ideas come flooding in I can’t think of anything more satisfying.

Why did you choose picture books as your primary genre?

I’d say that I’m definitely an artist foremost and so illustrating and writing picture books seemed the perfect and obvious path for me.

What book do you wish you had written, and why?

There are so many wonderful books that it’s difficult to choose just one, but perhaps Esio Trot by Roald Dahl for its sense of humor, imagination and happy ending.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?

Painting in my studio, growing as many flowers as I can to attract bees of all sorts and clipping topiary forms…. I love to get my sheep shears out and create spirals, giant rabbits and birds.

Do you belong to any writing organizations?

I belong to SCBWI and The Writer’s Loft in Sherborn MA.

What’s the last book you read?

I’m currently reading The Lemon Table by Julian Barnes.

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

It’s such a pleasure to join the Bookends family and be represented by Tracy. I’m so looking forward to working together.

  2. Yvonne’s illustrations are so beautiful and touching; I want the characters to live in my backyard! Yvonne herself is a wonderful person, too. So glad you’re representing her!
