Work With Us

BookEnds is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace through our internship program, our hiring practices, and in the books we represent.

Literary Agents

BookEnds has had a long history of hiring agents because they convinced us we needed them. That hasn't changed. While we aren't actively looking to hire, we also know that good things happen when we least expect them.

BookEnds agents are best known for their love of books and their desire to be the author's advocate and business partner. In addition, we look for someone with:

  • an eye for great books
  • an understanding of the market
  • tenacity
  • the desire to learn
  • positive energy
  • good communication skills
  • a love for the job
  • a passion for fun

Although our offices are in New Jersey, applicants can work remotely from anywhere. Salary is competitive.

Résumés can be sent to JFaust@bookendsliterary.com

Internship Program

BookEnds offers part-time, paid, in-office internship positions to one undergraduate or recent graduate per college semester (including Fall, Spring, and Summer).

We have had great success with this program so far! All of our Literary Assistants to date have interned with us in the past, and many of our interns have gone on to have successful careers elsewhere in the publishing industry. We believe in educating our interns about the industry by including them in company meetings, engaging them in conversations, encouraging questions, and working with them as they complete their duties.

Because we see the internship program as a real learning opportunity, applicants do not need to have previous publishing experience. They should, however, have a strong interest in pursuing publishing as a career, and we strongly encourage undergraduates to use the program for college credit.

All applicants must be available to work in the office for twenty hours a week.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Administrative support: filing, organizing bookshelves, packaging mail, etc.
  • Answering queries
  • Reading partial and full manuscripts for agents and writing readers reports
  • Assistance with social media
  • Performing special projects with or for the Literary Assistant

Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to jmcgowan@bookendsliterary.com with the subject heading, "[Fall/Spring/Summer] Internship Application." Applications should be submitted within the following time frames:

Summer Program: Before April 1st
Fall Program: Before August 1st
Spring Program: Before December 1st

Also, we're very happy to be partnering with We Need Diverse Books for their Summer Internship Grant Program. If this excellent program is something you qualify for, we urge you to apply as you're applying for our internship!

All applicants will receive responses regarding the status of their application.
