Within just a few days we’ve been quickly overwhelmed with resumes. I’m extremely humbled by all of you who consider BookEnds a place you’re interested in working.
Over the next few days we’ll be reviewing your letters and resumes and scheduling interviews. Ideally I’d like to make a decision by Valentine’s Day. Maybe sooner. We will be sending out a reply to all resumes. You won’t be left hanging.
In the meantime, I’m going to leave the information below on writing a strong cover letter. The more I read the more I realize the importance of this, of letting your personality shine through and making yourself stand out.

How to Impress with Your Cover Letter
What looking for a job, your presentation makes all the difference. Just like when I read queries, I am making my first judgement on your cover letter, which should be in the body of the email.
Tell me why I should hire you, what you’ll bring to the job, and why you are interested in BookEnds. I want to know in that letter what makes you stand out from the pack. I already have 20 resumes sitting in my queue. Why should I interview you?
I’m looking for a lot of things in an assistant and how you present yourself shows a lot about whether you’re a self-starter, organized, efficient, and a good fit at BookEnds.
Lastly, in full-disclosure, I am looking most closely at applicants from marginalized communities.
I love reading. It has been an escape from vicious bullying and a tumultuous home life growing up. I want to work in publishing along with becoming a professor and published author. I am in school and will have my bachelors in creative writing in two semesters. I love to read, write novels, poetry, short stories and essays. This is just the job I’m looking for. I have a free schedule most of the day all week and am willing to put in the work. I’ll be at your beck and call. I’m a black, queer writer and a diligent worker. Please consider me. I promise you don’t regret it.

Would you be open to a candidate whose entire background is in a completely different field? I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and worked in that field for over eight years. Last year I decided to pursue my passion for writing full time and have looked into agenting. The problem is, I have no idea where to begin. Give me a spreadsheet, or ask me to build a circuit or code software and I’m there, but the world of publishing is an alien world to me. This would seem like a great place to start, but being in an alien world, I don’t know if it’s appropriate to add myself to the pool.

You shouldn’t as I would be happy to be involved freely and allowed to be expressive and creative in my own voice.
I’m a recovering addict with a good heart n a soul full of love n gratitude for my life today and the people around me who love me just for that alone.
I really hope to hear back from you and be allowed to be a part of this.
The creative process is dead therapeutic.I learn guitar just now n write my own stuff.
Amateur of course but I give it my all n it serves me well n hope other people get something from it.

I hardly have time to read, when I do there is something spicy about being taken away to a whole new world through imagination. I am currently writing children books, while trying to get a mastery book out there. I am constantly on the computer, and would love having a job virtually from home. One of the skills, I am most honorable to have is the extensive knowledge of Microsoft office, Microsoft, spreadsheet and the ability to write 60 words per minute.
I know Jessica Faust mentioned they were going to get back to everyone, and hopefully have someone hired by the end of this month, or before mid-February. Has anyone heard anything? I’m sort of paranoid that my application got lost in the cloud somewhere, since I haven’t even received a rejection letter. Does anyone know if BOOKENDS is still planning to address every email, or if they’ve become too inundated with emails that it’s now not possible to respond to everyone? Sorry, just want to make sure my application at least made it through to the other side.
