Name: Amanda Abler What you Write: children/MG/YA nonfiction Agent: Tracy Marchini Why BookEnds? I was impressed by the agency’s open sharing of information about the publication business and all of Tracy’s clients with whom I spoke were pleased!
What do you love about writing nonfiction? I love writing nonfiction because it allows me to learn about things that truly interest me. This feels so much different compared to being assigned a project in school! I also love that the research for my books has led me to meet so many interesting people.
If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing? You will probably find me cooking or baking. I like to cook and am always experimenting with new Paleo recipes, especially the baked goods.
What’s the last book you read? Helen Keller: The Story of My Life
If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location? My dream location for writing would be a screened-in porch looking out over Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire.
Do you have any writing rituals? (e.g. burning a candle if you’re having trouble getting started at the computer or writing longhand first if you’re feeling uninspired.)
Most of the time I write on my couch with my feet propped up and my dog, Bear, tucked beside me. If I’m stuck, I often get up for a cup of warm apple cider. I probably drink too much cider!
I have also spent an enormous amount of time writing in the orthodontist’s waiting room. This is not my location of choice, however, I have learned that I need to sneak in my writing time whenever and wherever I can.
Do you belong to any writing organizations? I belong to SCBWI (Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators). This organization has been immensely helpful to me. I have learned so much and have met many generous and positive people.
