Why BookEnds?
I love how pro-author BookEnds is. In general, the agency has done an amazing job at trying to break down the walls that separate the industry from the authors. It always feels like we’re in this dark, silent tunnel trying to navigate our way out and all of BookEnds social media platforms help provide some light!
Tell us a bit about your writing process. Where do you write, and how often?
I live in a small apartment so I write at my desk that’s also in the living room/the kitchen. It’s a whole vibe, I cannot stress to you how much I love smelling the kitchen trash while I’m writing. It is my favorite thing – scented trash bags have changed my life forever.
Also, I write pretty much all day. Everyday. I take coffee breaks, and of course, I play with my cats because they are my life, but for the most part I write like 24/7.
Where can readers find you on the web and social media?
Twitter & TikTok @theantoniagold !
Do you have any writing rituals? (e.g. burning a candle if you’re having trouble getting started at the computer or writing longhand first if you’re feeling uninspired.)
I always have a coffee in hand, and a ginger ale. Yes, both at the same time because options are necessary. During my first draft, I don’t consume any other types of media. I don’t read, watch tv, no music, etc. I like to focus on myself and my story. While editing I’ll find a random Spotify playlist that matches the vibe I’m going for, light a candle, and write away!
What do you love about writing Speculative Fiction/Fantasy/Litfic?
Speculative is fun because it gives the reader and writer a glimpse into social interactions and human life. There’s something very satisfying about digging into the human psyche. Combining that with litfic creates so many alternating layers between the characters; since litfic is focused on the internal and fantasy is usually focused on the external, mixing the two gives this new experience of what it’s really like to exist.
Why did you choose the genre you’ve chosen?
Honestly, I kinda feel like my genre chose me and I’m grateful for that.
What is the hardest part about writing Speculative Fiction/Fantasy/Litfic?
Because fantasy and litfic are very different, it sometimes gets difficult the balance the two. With fantasy there’s this drive for external conflict and litfic is focused mainly on internal conflict, so it’s hard to please both sides of what the genres are asking for. When writing fantasy, you feel this need to worldbuild whereas that doesn’t always exist with litfic and if the balance isn’t properly distributed, you can almost forget what just happened because you’re lost in worldbuilding or lost in so deep in your character’s head that you don’t know where they are physically.
If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?
Like a cottage in the woods, but not too deep in the woods because I have a physical dependency on Dunkin so that needs to be easily accessible. Also lots of windows, honestly, like a glass cottage in the woods.
How did you know your book was ready to submit?
I don’t even know if it was ready, I just felt like I wanted to get it out there.

Oscar Wilde wrote paragraphs about rugs. Antonia writes paragraphs about the kitchen trash. They’re the same person, honestly. I cannot WAIT to read Antonia’s debut!
