On the call with Ramona, I swear I knew she was the agent for me before we even got into the nitty-gritty of things. It was all laughs and good juju. She’s a champion for the underdog and we clicked over our goals for seeing more representation of the underrepresented. And that’s not only her—it’s all of BookEnds. I love that they work together as a team to help everyone under the umbrella. Case closed.
What genres do you write? Read?
Same thing goes for both: anything with fun magic, queer love, or creepy vibes (better yet, all three). I could never get my hands on enough LGBTQ+ stories growing up, so I’m honored to write for readers who need these stories like I did.
Plotter or pantster?
Plantser? I’ll always have an outline to guide me, but things don’t always work out like you want them to. Sometimes you’ve just gotta get in there, let go, and see what happens.
Synopses, love them or hate ‘em?
Love them, as strange as it is to see an entire book on one page. But queries? Bane of my existence. Query Shark is my hero for getting me as far as she has. I owe her a fruit basket.
Do you have a writing playlist or a vision board? If so, what’s on them?
A carefully curated playlist that might be getting too long. Just a sample: Glass Animals, Phoria, Sufjan Stevens, ODESZA, Aesop Rock, Scissor Sisters, and KAYTRANADA.
Drink of choice when writing? When not writing?
Does it have caffeine? I’ll probably drink it. I hear it’s a crime to not serve sweet tea in the South. I take advantage of that.
Day or Night writer?
Night for sure. Anywhere between that 11PM to 6AM range is when things are the quietest and the words flow easy.
Twitter or Instagram? Or Facebook? Where can we find you?
Would you believe me if I said I’m terrible with social media? You can still find a hodgepodge of my retweets and writing thoughts on Twitter.
If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would you want to meet
and why?
Augusten Burroughs. Growing up, that man’s memoirs changed my life for the better. I’m forever grateful and still laughing at things I probably shouldn’t be.
Where can readers find you on the web and social media?
At the moment, you can find me on Twitter at @DevLLee. My DMs are always open.
