Name: Jodie Slaughter
What you Write: Romance
Agent: Kim Lionetti
Why BookEnds? When I was querying, I was very careful to only select agents and agencies that I could not only see myself growing my career with, but that I could also see myself feeling at safe and secure with. Long story short, both Kim and BookEnds gave me a ton of warm and fuzzies right off the bat to compliment the confidence I felt in the work they do.

What book do you wish you had written, and why? Honestly, there are more than a few books I could say this about. More recently, though, it’s Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert. I tend to love everything Talia writes but this book in particular really highlighted everything that shines about her writing. The concept is engaging, the characters are impossible not to love, and the exploration of what it means to live with chronic illness is incredibly important. Plus, it’s sexy and hilarious as all get out.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?  I’m going to force myself to not say “on Twitter” here. I draw a lot of my writing inspiration from TV, which gives me an amazing excuse to binge watch shows – which I do often. But when my eyes aren’t glued to a screen, I love to cook, take mini road trips to small cities around the Southeastern U.S., and enjoy the company of my absolutely ridiculous, perfect friends (when we aren’t in the midst of a pandemic, that is).

What’s the last book you read? Where The Honeybells Grow by Ruthie Lenor. A really gorgeous Black small town romance that is as swoony and sensual as it is charming. It’s the perfect read for lazy summer days.

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location? A spacious, stilted house overlooking a gorgeous bayou in Louisiana. Strong WiFi is a must but if I get to see an alligator pop its head out of the water every once in a while I’ll be especially happy.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing? “First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.” – Octavia Butler

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family? I’m excited about having the space to thrive with a team of people who are bursting at the seams with talent, knowledge, and care.
