Why BookEnds?

BookEnds makes me feel like their clients are their priority. I love how personable they are, and their YouTube channel is incredible! I think the mere fact that the team puts so much time and effort into generously sharing their knowledge with authors speaks a lot about their values.

What book do you wish you had illustrated, and why?

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. To me, it’s one of the most profound, haunting, and bittersweet children’s books of all time.

If you’re not reading or drawing, what would we catch you doing?

Doing something outdoors – hiking, biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, backpacking, or simply walking in the forest.

Where can readers find you on the web and social media?

On Instagram @dreamist_art and my website www.dreamist-art.com/

What’s the last book you read?

“Fight Night” by Miriam Toews, whose work I find deeply moving. I laughed a lot when I was reading it, and then I cried a little.

If money were no object, what would be your dream drawing location?

Somewhere on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia, in an old cabin with a large deck overlooking the ocean.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing/drawing?

Richard Peck articulated it so beautifully in one of his interviews: “Fiction is the only eternal life we can be sure of.”

And a line from Wisława Szymborska’s poem “Possibilities”: “I prefer the absurdity of writing poems to the absurdity of not writing poems.” In my mind, this is the essence of any creative process.

What’s your favorite piece of drawing advice you’ve received?

I think it’s about separating what’s in our control from what’s not, and not agonizing over the things that are out. (i.e. Will they respond to my query? Will they like my ideas? What will they want to see in my portfolio? What will the market be like?.. )

What matters is whether we show up and do the work, and whether we stay true to ourselves in it.

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

An opportunity to advance my career, grow in my craft, and have Tracy as an ally along the way.
