Why BookEnds? Kindness and savviness are qualities that are extremely important to me – and BookEnds definitely reflects this! I love the stellar reputation that BookEnds has in the kidlit department and was bowled over by the wit and warmth evidenced by Emily, Jessica, James and everyone here who are creating an encouraging and inclusive space for writers to grow.

What book do you wish you had written, and why?

Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It’s the perfect fairytale with an edge – magical, whimsical, slightly dark and so poignant.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?

Singing up a storm, chasing my two littles around the house, binge-watching period dramas, cooking (and consuming) complex carbs – and avoiding exercise with a passion.

Where can readers find you on the web and social media?

I’m on Twitter at @kimlsywrites and am currently working on my author website at www.kimberlyleebooks.com.

What’s the last book you read?

Last full read – The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom (through a veil of tears). Currently reading –  The Sixteen Trees of the Somme by Lars Mytting (so good!)

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?

London, in a heartbeat! I lived there for several years and still have a large community of friends and family over there – missing my second home terribly at the moment 🙁

Or Florence – the art, the culture, the history, the FOOD! It’s one of my favorite places in the world and a city that never fails to inspire.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing?

Let me live, love, and say it well in good sentences.” – Sylvia Plath-

What’s your favorite piece of writing advice you’ve received?

“Honey, don’t worry – you’ve got this.” -Mom-

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

As a Malaysian writer, having an agent like Emily (who is such a champion for the elevation of BIPOC voices in publishing) means the world to me. I’m blessed to find someone who’s not only passionate about my work, but who cares about her team in such a genuine way. I also love the fact that joining the BookEnds family has put me in the path of my creative, hilarious agent siblings  – and in the company of other inspiring authors at this agency as well!

What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches?

Never give up – and never let rejection determine your worth. Be open to the great opportunities out there, from pitch contests to offers of critiques from fellow writers, because every little bit helps in honing your craft.

Build your community, keep reading and above all else – keep writing. As my Mom would say: “Honey, don’t worry – you’ve got this.”
