Eight Tips to Make Your Pitching Experience a Success

A blurb should be 1-2 (preferably about 2) paragraphs describing the action, the hook and the excitement in your book. If you are still unsure what that means imagine you are telling a friend about your favorite book or movie. Or just read some back cover copy.
4. When finished with the blurb take another deep breath. Some agents might want to ask questions or chat further. Others will simply request or pass. (I’m a question asker). Others (me again) might actually give you feedback on the book, but based on your pitch.
I might tell you the book sounds like a confusing hybrid of two genres or that your main character doesn’t sound nearly as interesting as a secondary character, have you thought of changing it up? This is the hardest part for most authors because it means being open to direct and honest feedback and criticism in the moment. The biggest mistake I see authors making at this point is shutting down and not listening. If you need to, get out a notebook or piece of paper to take notes (have one handy and ready to go).
5. If a request is made write down exactly what the agent wants. The back of a business card is good, but a notebook might be a better way for you to keep track of all requests and your own notes on the agents. Now is also the time to hand the agent your card if you have one (I don’t always think one is necessary if you don’t have one).
6. And finally, before thanking the agent, be prepared to ask questions. I always ask authors if they have questions, but not all agents will. It is acceptable to get up with a quick thank you at this point and move on. It’s also okay to ask if you can ask a question or just to ask questions if there is still time left. Some good things to ask: What is the market looking for? What is your passion project or MSWL right now? What have you been reading for pleasure? Are there any other pros you think I should be talking to? Or maybe this agent has the answer to something that came up at an earlier panel or discussion. This is your time with an agent, don’t be afraid to use it.
7. Be prepared to send the material! While you don’t need to send it that day or even that week, once you get home from the conference the agent, who is hopefully still thinking about and talking about your work, will be expecting to find it in her inbox. So don’t delay too long if you can help.
8. And lasly, have fun and good luck!!!
Pitching rocks. I always really enjoy it although I rarely follow the standard pitch format. I had my first BookEnds pitch when Moe came to Oz *waving at Moe* and she can attest to the fact my approach was different.
I’ve been enjoying the you tube clips but because I have Barbarians who are enamoured with watching you tubers playing games (what is with that?) instead of doing homework we’ve had to ban you tube on our router. So no more BookEnds you tube for a while for me =(
