This week marked the release of Bill Crider’s last Dan Rhodes mystery, That Old Scoundrel Death. I just wanted to take a moment to say how much we all miss him here at BookEnds, and I know his fans and many, many friends in the writing community are feeling his loss too.
I was so fortunate to work with him over the last twelve years, but really that was only the tip of the iceberg of his long, successful career. Bill was a super talented and highly respected author, but he was also a loyal advocate to other writers, a loving, devoted family man (including to those famous “VBKs” –Very Bad Kittens — of his), and the kindest, classiest gentleman you’d ever want to meet.
Even in his final days, Bill poured his heart and soul into this last book. Library Journal calls it “a satisfying final ending to Rhodes’s career. Crider’s works remain a model for mysteries featuring small-town sheriffs who take on cases with wit and humanity.”
Few achieve the career he did, and fewer still do it with the same grace. You set the bar high, Bill, and for that we thank you.
