We’re thrilled to have recently launched BookEnds Jr., a site dedicated to all of BookEnds’ Children’s (picture book, middle grade, and YA) books!

Sylvan Creekmore at Wednesday Books has acquired, in a preempt, S. Gonzales’s Only Mostly Devastated. Pitched as Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets Clueless, inspired by Grease, the book follows a boy trying to navigate a family crisis and a move to a new school who is quickly adopted by a new group of friends and comes face-to-face with his summer fling—only to discover that the perfect boy he remembers now won’t even look at him. Publication is planned for spring/summer 2019; Moe Ferrara at BookEnds Literary brokered the deal for world rights.
Meera Sriram’s THE YELLOW SUITCASE, illustrated by Meera Sethi, the story of a girl who travels from America to India to mourn her grandmother’s passing and discovers a gift left just for her, to Alexis Orgera and Chad Reynolds at Penny Candy Books, for publication in Fall 2018, by Tracy Marchini at BookEnds for the author.

I have a question about YA books (as a parent of bookworms, not a writer this time). I find it really hard to buy mystery YA books for boys. Is the lack of this genre because publishers aren’t interested or because you don’t see people writing them (or am I just not seeing them in Aussie bookshops)?
My two love mystery books, but it’s hard to keep a good flow of mystery for my bookworms. My 14yr old has started reading my cozies and he reads many YA mystery books with female protags while he and his 12yr old brother both read fantasy books with a mystery plot.
I’d really like to find them some great YA contemporary mysteries with male protags. If they are out there and I’m missing them I’d love recommendations!
I hear you. It’s definitely a gap in that market. Try: Liars Inc. by Paula Stokes and maybe I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. How to Win At High School was a good one too, though not a mystery.
