Welcome to BookEnds, James Markert!

  • By: admin | Date: Jan 12 2018

What book do you wish you had written, and why? Three books I wished I’d written are: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, because I LOVE cathedrals and the time period. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon because of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books; and The Alienist by Caleb Carr because it’s the best historical suspense/mystery novel ever written.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing? Hanging out by the fire pit with family, friends, and bourbon. Cooking. Playing volleyball with my son and daughter. Maybe teaching a little tennis (I’ve been a tennis pro for twenty three years). Watching movies.

Where can readers find you on the web and social media? My website is www.jamesmarkert.com and I try to update it every couple decades. You can find my Author Page on Facebook: @jamesmarkertauthor and Twitter: @JamesMarkert and Goodreads: James Markert and Instagram: jamesmarkert74 and Pinterest: jamesmarkert74

What’s the last book you read? Just finished Strange Weather by Joe Hill, and it was quite a ride.

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location? I can’t narrow this down to one, because I’ve actually thought of this. So here’s three: In a villa overlooking the hills of Tuscany. Inside an Irish Pub. And in an office big as a tennis court with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and windows overlooking some Charleston live oaks.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing? “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

What’s your favorite piece of writing advice you’ve received? “Write the first draft to completion even if it’s crap. Perfect it on the rewrites.”

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family? Everything; Bright horizons!

What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches? Don’t give up! Take constructive criticism to heart. Resist the urge to be fancy; just give them the meat and potatoes and don’t drown it in gravy.
