Today, I’m excited to welcome Kristina Jones to BookEnds!

Kristina is the author-illustrator of The Amazing African Animal Alphabet forthcoming from Penguin Random House South Africa. She works in textiles, and I just love her ability to add depth and expression to her characters while working in a gorgeous palette of fabrics. Her characters have humor and spunk, and I’m thrilled to have her on board!

I hope you enjoy learning more about Kristina and her work below.

What book do you wish you had written, and why?

There are so many! I tend to gravitate towards clever picture books with a sense of humour. If I had to choose just one it would have to be I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen. Klassen’s ability to tell a story using the most subtle of expressions and minimal dialogue is outstanding and I love that it’s wry humour appeals to parents as well as kids.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?

Probably cooking and hanging out with my family and friends. I enjoy feeding the people I love. It doesn’t get much better than cooking a great meal and sharing it with lovely people.

What’s the last book you read?

Even though the holidays are over, I just read The Empty Stocking written by Richard Curtis with illustrations by Rebecca Cobb to my daughter. It is a fantastic read-aloud book with so much imagination.

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?

Anywhere quiet with a great view and no other humans! I’ve often thought a cabin in the woods or an oceanside cottage would be heaven.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing?

While it is not necessarily a quote about reading or writing, this quote as always spoken to my creative process.

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” ― Martha Graham

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

I think I am most excited to collaborate with people who love books as much as I do and to have the opportunity to focus on doing what I love.

What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches?

Research, revise, don’t give up. Keep refining your art. Don’t wait for the work to come to you. Set personal projects. That is where some of the best material comes from.
