Name: Layla What you Write: Middle Grade Horror Agent: Emily Forney Why BookEnds? BookEnds is just super welcoming and informative. There is a huge support network, not to even mention the industry network!! I feel like I am in such good hands with folks who truly care about my career.
What genres do you write? Read?
I read and write almost exclusively in Middle Grade fiction. I lean heavily on fantasy or sci-fi or horror – I love getting out of my element and having the chance to live through experiences I’ll never be able to!
Plotter or pantster?
Definitely a plotter, though I don’t stay totally committed to an idea if the story starts to pull me in another direction.
Synopses, love them or hate ‘em?
Love them actually! Once it was summed up as “write only a sentence per chapter” and only the bare minimums, I started to see them as a lot of fun!
Do you have a writing playlist or a vision board? If so, what’s on them?
Without a doubt, I have to have a vibe song! It varies between the books I write, but once I find one perfect song that captures the mood and feeling of the book, I’ll listen to it at least once before I start writing (and sometimes on repeat during my entire session!)
Drink of choice when writing? When not writing?
COFFEE. There is no other choice. Though I do make room for water when needed!
Day or Night writer?
I must be a night writer! (then again I ~do write about vampires so perhaps that’s partly me getting into character?)
Twitter or Instagram? Or Facebook? Where can we find you?
I’m on Twitter! You can find me at @LaylaHersch
If you could meet any author, living or dead, who would you want to meet and why?
Oh my gosh right now I really want to meet Sofiya Pasternack. She has been an incredibly patient and wonderfully supportive mentor to me and none of my writing could be where it is without her help! (Maybe that’s less grand than the question was looking for but – then perhaps Rick Riordan? I’ve seen him at a “author signing” (it was more like a show) and he seems like a really nice guy)
