I have long promised to make publishing a more inclusive place and BookEnds has worked hard to contribute through the authors we represent. Where I’ve failed however, is within my own walls. Like many agents and business owners, I haven’t done the work I should have to actively bring in more publishing professionals of color. To reach out to you openly and directly.
If I truly want to make publishing more inclusive it starts in my own house and in 2020, I vow to do better.
For publishing professionals of color, I am opening the door at BookEnds and accepting resumes for a full-time agent position. I’ve often said I never knew who I was looking for until they walked in the door and this position is no different. BookEnds represents both fiction and nonfiction for adults and children. Whether you’re bringing a list of clients with you or starting from scratch, the ideal candidate brings their own sense of self and style and challenges us to try new things. The only thing all BookEnds agents have is drive and a passion for advocating for authors. The BookEnds motto for 2020 is Think Bigger, Think Bolder, and Think Braver. If you think you can, you will and you should apply.
At this time, I don’t have anything available at the entry-level or assistant level, which means this is a commission-based position for someone with publishing experience as an assistant, intern or associate agent or editor. While I can’t offer a salary, I can promise mentorship and the assistance and support you need to grow your own list. For those enjoying their work at home experience, it doesn’t have to change. BookEnds has a long-established remote environment created so that all of our agents feel as much a part of a team as if they were in the same room together.
