Emily Forney Loves the Fun, Commercial, and Weird

We’re continuing our meet-the-agents summer with the wonderful Emily Forney! Come get to know her!

What is your agenting superpower?

I think I’m fairly idealistic and so optimistic that it turns into a fixation. Genuinely, I can hear a new goal or hypothetical idea from one of my authors and my brain will instantly map out an entire journey for how to make it happen. That’s probably why I love working on series so much because I work with my authors on outlining several different story lines and thinking years in advance, and that sort of collaboration is one of my favorite things. I also love to romanticize the every day, and that includes my agenting work, so in my mind everything will be huge and make massive waves in our industry.

What do people often get wrong about you/what would they be surprised to know?

I’m incredibly organized and I love color coded plans and lists. I really really love lists. Despite my public persona of eating three day old burritos from my couch and losing my car keys frequently, I do actually have my life together! Satisfying, finished products bring me so much peace and joy, that I casually watch power washing TikToks and pantry organization videos to fall asleep.

What are 5 songs on your playlist (that represent you, that you always recommend, that you listen to on repeat, etc.)?

Alright, here we go. My range in albums or general vibes:

Spiderman Into the Spiderverse album

Nearly any 2WEI covers because I like to write while I have movie trailer music playing in the background

The Lumineers entire discography

Early 2000s pop and Disney Channel original movie soundtracks

What are 5 books on your reading list (that represent you, that you always recommend, that you would read over and over again, etc.) and why?

I really hate this question so deeply because my favorites change all the time and there are also certain books that are absolutely between me and my maker. BUT, I will say I have a few I love deeply and recommend all the time, like Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score (a book I definitely think will be similar to my taste as I start acquiring books in the adult space), Honey and Spice by Bolu Babalola (my perfect college romance), and Camp by L.C. Rosen (a queer YA that has so many layers in the isolated space of a summer camp that I fell in love with).

I’m really excited for when Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco comes out this year, and I also have Love Radio by Ebony LaDelle and The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah on my TBR right next to my nightstand right now!

What does your reading list say about you? What does it say about your MSWL?

I have a pattern with my reading list usually. I will read a three to seven book fantasy series and then do a palate cleanser of contemporary summer romances. And truthfully, that’s pretty much what my MSWL is at all times. I want projects I can dive deeply into the world building with, develop really intricate stories and character arcs, and then on the other end I am always on the hunt for contemporaries with emotional and romantic through lines.

What would you like querying authors to know about you?

I love chaos, romance, heists, magic, and heartbreak. Please see me as our resident book bimbo who likes monsters, curses, smut, and messiness, and truly, I would love to see these things from authors who historically haven’t been given the space and grace to do so. Marginalized authors and erased stories are very welcome here to explore and experiment with the fun, the commercial, and the weird.
