Jessica Faust’s Books of the Year for 2017

I never think of myself as a “best of” person, but this year when compiling my books-to-gift list I realized I ended up creating a short list of the best books I read in 2017. For reasons of ease I never include BookEnds projects or my own clients, primarily because I usually read their books years before they are ever published and, because, that complicates things.
These are not necessarily books published in 2017 and, weirdly, half of them were giving to me by editors. So thank you for that.
I do think all of these would make great gifts for yourself or someone special on your list.
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. I found this book so incredibly compelling, both in the hook and set-up. When I talk about hooks this is what I’m talking about. A psychological suspense while trapped on a cruise ship? Everything about that sentence terrifies me and the book didn’t disappoint.
The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking. I love this book so much that I’ve created a Hygge box as a gift. In fact, I sort of wish I’d done this for everyone on my list. A copy of the book and a personalized box of Hygge to go along. It’s what everyone needs this time of year.
Always by Sarah Jio While this book is definitely women’s fiction I think it would appeal to romance fans as well. The story of a woman who has settled into a happy life with her fiance when suddenly she thinks her true love, the man who one day just disappeared, might have returned. This is a little bit psychological, a little bit romance, and a lot wonderful.
This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel Another great women’s fiction about themes that are very close to my heart. This book tells the story of how a family copes with the discovery that their youngest son is transgender and how they manage the minefield that comes with allowing your child to be herself. It’s a book I haven’t stopped thinking about many months later.

Hygge sounds like an interesting concept I’m defiantly going to read that one.
This is how it always is.
Kinda is how it is, we have always open to the idea of the children being whoever they are. They go to a school who have awards for their views of GBLT.
The latest statement from my youngest about is group (of about 8 mixed b/g) friends “I’m going out with the only straight girl in the group.”
When asked about the boys in the group he just shrugs and walks off.
Now if I could get him to wash his hair more often, I’d be a happy mamma bear.
With a TBR pile in the hundreds (should I admit to that?) I’ve grabbed a stack of mystery novels to lose myself in these holidays.
