Why BookEnds?

They have always been a dream agency for me. I love how they present themselves and are always educating and helping writers out.

What book do you wish you had written, and why?

I wish I wrote everything written by Darby Kane or Riley Sager. The way they weave tension into every scene is *chef’s kiss*. They both are such stellar story tellers, where I think about the character and stories weeks after I finish.

If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?

Spending time with my family (I have two young kiddos and two dogs!), listening to music, or finding ways to spend time outside. We’re a big baseball house so we always have a game on the TV.

What’s the last book you read?

The Strangers We Know by Elle Marr

If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?

A lofted apartment in a quiet neighborhood in Chicago, in the winter. I cannot think of a better ‘mood-setting’ location.

What’s your favorite quote about reading or writing?

Do what you love, love what you do. It’s a post that hangs in out house, and my spouse and I talk about it all the time. We do what we love, and love what we do. It’s a process and it takes time, energy, and persistence. Writing is hard. So dang hard. But I love the process and growth that happens with it.

What’s your favorite piece of writing advice you’ve received?

You can’t edit a blank page. Get it all down without worrying about spelling or grammar or if it makes sense. Write it all down. It’s easy to make excuses or roadblock us if we’re seeking perfection. There are drafts for reasons! Having the world’s worst first draft is better than a blank page. Give yourself permission to write terribly and finish the draft.

What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?

When I started out writing years ago, I had a list of “dream agents” who were always the I’ll send a query but have no hope kinda thing. The first person I sent my story to was Jessica at BookEnds and within 24 hours, I had a full request. It felt like magic. That no hope turned to a little bit of hope. Then I got the email asking for a call and it was the coolest, best, wonderful feeling. I am so excited to learn and grow and partner with Jessica and all the others at BookEnds. I can’t wait to shout out about other authors there and meet more people.
