Name: Sophie Kim What you Write: YA Fantasy Agent: Emily Forney
Why BookEnds?
I’ve always admired BookEnds, and have been following the YouTube channel for a while to learn tips on navigating the world of querying and publishing. I was overjoyed when Emily Forney reached out to me to offer representation, as her passion for my manuscript far surpasses anything that I’d ever allowed myself to hope for. Straight off the bat, I knew that I wanted her to champion my story.
What book do you wish you had written, and why?
I wish that I had written The Secret History by Donna Tartt—it’s my absolute favorite book of all time. I originally come from Vermont, where the novel is set, so the scenery of the story is incredibly close to my heart. I actually lived in the town where Bunny takes Richard to an expensive restaurant, and conveniently forgets his wallet! The prose is so beautiful, and each character seems to live so completely and so fully on the page. And the plot twists are excellently done.
If you’re not reading or writing, what would we catch you doing?
I’m currently a college student, so chances are that you’ll catch me determinedly smashing out an essay, or glaring down at a too-big textbook. But other than that, I absolutely adore baking, crafting, and spending time with my family and my friends.
Where can readers find you on the web and social media?
I’m still in the process of creating an Instagram page for myself as an author, but for now, I can be found on Twitter as @sophiekimwrites.
What’s the last book you read?
The last book that I read was City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert. It’s an amazing novel, and I really felt as if I were hanging out with the dazzling showgirls of the Lily Playhouse with the marvelous main character.
If money were no object, what would be your dream writing location?
I would love to have a cute country cottage in England, with a sprawling garden and a perfect view of sunrises and sunsets. I can’t imagine any location better for writing.
What excites you most about joining the BookEnds family?
I’m really excited to begin working with Emily! I can tell that joining BookEnds is the start of a journey that I am more than ready to embark on.
What advice would you give to other authors in the query trenches?
When agents reply in a rejection letter that the industry is subjective, they’re being completely honest. What one agent passes on, another agent could adore. It’s all about finding your novel’s perfect match!
How did you know your book was ready to submit?
I knew that it was ready to submit when it was exactly what I wished had been on the shelves when I was younger. I also knew that it was ready to submit when my mom and my dad, my first beta-readers, gushed about it with the passion that I hope to see in my future audience!
