Tell us a bit about your writing process. Where do you write, and how often?
I would love to say that I am a plotter, but I am a complete pantser! Often my ideas start as a title or a first line that pops into my head, and I discover the story as I write. Admittedly, this means I revise a lot!
I don’t adhere to the advice that a writer must write every day. I like to let my ideas tumble around my mind until I can no longer contain them and have to write! Since I don’t have a designated office space, most of my stories are written standing at my laptop, which sits on my fireplace mantle.
What do you love about writing picture books?
I think there is something magical about introducing a child to the love of reading.
What is the hardest part about writing picture books?
I think the hardest part about writing picture books is finding the perfect words. As a picture book writer, we are often tasked to tell a vibrant and engaging story in 500 words or less and it’s like a puzzle, shifting and rearranging/replacing words until you find the perfect fit.
