Your Queries are Flooding My Inbox…Thank You

  • By: Jessica Faust | Date: Jun 30 2022

I receive somewhere around 500 queries every month. So does everyone else at BookEnds. It’s a lot. It’s incredible. Every time I log into my inbox it’s full of new queries. Or at least one new query depending on how long it’s been since I logged in, and it’s probably one of my most favorite things.

So often I see authors hesitant to send queries. They’re afraid of rejection, which I understand. They’re also afraid agents don’t want to see another query. Which, I understand why there’s that belief, but I don’t agree.

BookEnds has grown in ways I could never have imagined over the past 20 years and the basis for that growth, that first seed, started with a query. That first author or group of authors who got wind through a writers group that there was a new agent in town and took that first brave step to send a query. Not just brave because they were putting themselves out there, but brave because they were willing to give a new agent a chance. In the same way an agent is willing to give a new author a chance.

Whenever I hear agents overwhelmed by queries, I remind them of the honor that so many authors think they are worthy of a partnership in their career. I also remind them that the minute the queries stop coming so does our career stop growing.

Queries are the basis of every agency. Without them, without you, we wouldn’t be here. So thank you, thank you for flooding my inbox and the faith you have in me and in BookEnds by doing so.
